E-Bikes for Seniors in Scottsdale: What to Look For and Where to Ride
Scottsdale has one of the largest and most active 55+ communities in the country — and e-bikes have quietly become one of the most popular ways residents and snowbirds are getting outside and staying active. It makes perfect sense. The terrain is flat, the weather is nearly perfect from October through April, and the city's trail system is purpose-built for comfortable, low-stress riding.
E-bikes in particular are a game-changer for older riders. The pedal-assist motor means you're still pedaling and getting exercise, but you're not grinding up a hill, overheating, or putting excessive strain on your knees. You go as hard as you want — and the bike meets you where you are.
Here's what seniors should know before buying or renting an e-bike in Scottsdale.
What to Look for in an E-Bike as a Senior Rider
Step-Through Frame
This is the single most important feature for most senior riders. A step-through frame has a low or absent top tube, so you can mount and dismount the bike without swinging your leg over a high bar. For riders with limited hip mobility, knee issues, or balance concerns, this is a safety feature as much as a comfort feature.
PedalJetz carries several step-through models from Aventon and Euphree — including options specifically built for comfort and stability.

Pedal Assist Levels
Good e-bikes offer multiple levels of pedal assist, typically ranging from 1 (minimal assistance) to 5 (maximum). This means you can ride at your own pace and dial up the assist whenever you need it — hills, headwinds, or simply when you've been out for a while and your legs are getting tired. You're always in control.
A Comfortable, Upright Riding Position
Many road bikes and even some e-bikes put riders in an aggressive forward lean that strains the neck, shoulders, and lower back. For seniors, an upright or semi-upright riding position is far more comfortable over longer rides. Look for bikes with a higher handlebar position and a well-padded saddle.
Stable, Wider Tires
Tires in the 2.0"–2.4" range provide noticeably more stability and grip than narrow road tires, which matters a lot when riding on gravel, canal paths, or slightly uneven pavement. They also absorb more road vibration, which reduces fatigue.
Lighter Weight (or a Trike for More Stability)
Standard e-bikes typically weigh between 50–70 lbs. While the motor offsets much of this when riding, you'll still need to handle the bike when parking, loading, or maneuvering. If weight is a concern, look for lighter models — or consider an e-trike.
PedalJetz carries e-trikes for riders who want maximum stability without sacrificing the joy of getting outside. Three wheels means no balancing required, zero risk of tipping at a stop, and a completely different (and often more relaxed) riding experience.
Best Routes for Senior Riders in Scottsdale
Scottsdale's infrastructure is genuinely excellent for casual, comfortable riding. Here are the routes that work best for seniors:
The Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt
This is the crown jewel. The Greenbelt runs approximately 11 miles north to south through the center of Scottsdale, following a wide, paved path with no car traffic, plenty of shade trees, and multiple parks and rest areas along the way. You can ride as little or as much as you want — there's no pressure to complete the whole route. Many riders do a comfortable 4–6 mile out-and-back and call it a perfect morning.
The terrain is almost perfectly flat, and the path is well-maintained year-round. It doesn't get much better than this for relaxed riding.
The Arizona Canal Path
Scottsdale's canal system offers miles of flat, paved riding through residential and commercial areas. The canal paths connect to the Greenbelt and wind through some of the city's most pleasant neighborhoods. It's a great option for riders who want a longer ride without traffic concerns.
McCormick Ranch and Gainey Ranch Neighborhoods
These quiet, tree-lined neighborhoods in central Scottsdale have wide streets, low traffic, and a very pleasant suburban riding environment. Ideal for an easy hour-long ride with nice scenery and easy places to stop.
Old Town Scottsdale
If you want to combine a ride with some sightseeing, Old Town offers a flat, accessible loop through Scottsdale's most vibrant area — galleries, restaurants, and public art around every corner. Best enjoyed early morning on weekends before traffic picks up.
Try Before You Buy — Rent First
If you're a Scottsdale resident or snowbird considering buying an e-bike, the smartest first step is renting one. PedalJetz offers 2-hour, 3-hour, 4-hour, and full-day rentals, which gives you a real chance to experience what different frame styles and assist levels feel like on actual Scottsdale roads — before spending $1,500–$3,000 on a purchase.
Many of our customers rent on a Saturday, find a model they love, and come back to buy. It's the lowest-risk way to make the right decision.
